We all want to be heard in our relationships. But how often do we really listen?
Many times, when someone is talking to us, we are already thinking about what we want to say next. We are trying to explain our side, defend ourselves, or find a solution.
And in doing that, we may miss what the other person is actually trying to tell us.
I have come to believe that listening is one of the simplest, yet most difficult things in a relationship.
Sometimes the person in front of us doesn’t need advice or a solution. They just want to feel that their feelings matter.
Instead of saying, “Why do you always do this?” perhaps we can pause and ask, “What made you feel this way?”
That small change can make a big difference.
Healthy relationships don’t mean that we agree on everything. We will have different opinions, expectations and ways of looking at things. What matters is whether we can talk about those differences with respect.
And sometimes, the best thing we can do for a relationship is to listen a little more and react a little less.
